These tanneries have been carefully chosen for the quality of their products, their service and their commitment to the environment. Contemporary Leathers was founded by David Gourlay in 1995. In 2001, he and Michael Fitzsimons of Instyle Contract Fabrics formed a joint venture company to build on the successful business model that had been created. Instyle contributed their Australia-wide network of agents and representatives and the giant Swedish tannery - Elmo, while Gourlay added over 20 years upholstery leather experience and tanneries from Denmark, Germany and France. Today, Contemporary Leathers offers over 26 different leather types in approximately 260 colours. By constantly networking with the tanneries Contemporary Leathers is able to provide up to the minute information to the market and maintain its position as the most innovative supplier of upholstery leather in Australia. Leading European furniture houses such as Fritz Hansen, De Sede, Wilkhahn, Rolf Benz and Vitra, form an honour roll of customers familiar with the quality and beauty of the leathers offered by Contemporary Leathers. Closer to home, Contemporary Leathers has been involved in some of the most prestigious projects in Australia, including, among others, The Australian Federal Parliament, The Victoria and NSW Parliaments, the ABN Amro Bank Headquarters, Sydney; The County Court, Melbourne; The National Library and Gallery, Canberra; The Australian War Memorial, Canberra; Federation Square, Melbourne; Crown Casino, Melbourne; Star City Casino, Sydney; The Westin Hotel, Sydney; and The Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel. Contemporary Leathers' ranges have also been used in various Qantas Club Lounges, and hotels, bars and nightclubs including, The Tilbury Hotel, The Cargo Bar, The Oxford Hotel, and The Establishment, Sydney.
